Note: As of March 15, 2019, most digital download issues will no longer be displayed. This decision was made because of the ephemeral nature of these issues, sometimes deficient audio quality and legitimacy questions.
Because of the large number of recordings involved, Benny Powell's discography is a massive undertaking. At the outset, I decided that some limitations in scope would have to be imposed. Thus I have chosen not to include here his sessions with the Lionel Hampton (1949-1951; except for those with guitarist Wes Montgomery) and Count Basie (1952-1963) bands as those are well known and details about them can be found elsewhere. For example, Powell's Hampton period can be found in Vincent Pelote's discography section of Hamp: An Autobiography by Hampton and James Haskins (Amistad Press, 1993) while the Basie years are comprehensively covered in Count Basie: A Bio-discography by Chris Sheridan (Greenwood Press, 1986). Instead, I have tried to emphasize the recordings of lower profile but still high quality that some jazz enthusiasts and collectors may have missed as well as sessions that demonstrate his versatility as a sideman. Many of Powell's early small group recordings involved his fellow Basie band members including Joe Newman, Thad Jones, Frank Wess, Frank Foster, Billy Mitchell and Al Grey.

This is Dinah Washington with a big band, the complete personnel of which are not known. Freddie Green's unmistakeable rhythm guitar is present and the baritone saxophone soloist on track f is certainly Cecil Payne. Tracks a and b feature tenor saxophone and trombone solos and the latter could very well be by Powell. The trombonist's presence is suggested in the liner notes to the 1987 CD reissue Mercury 832 448-2 and the Ruppli/Novitsky Mercury label discography as well as the Bruyninckx and Lord discographies. At the time of this session, Powell was a member of the Lionel Hampton Band.

The longer take of "Basie Ain't Here" is a composite of alternate takes. The matrix numbers assigned by Atlantic are 25899 for "Frankosis" and 25897 for the longer take of "Basie Ain't Here."
There is substantial variation in track timings shown on the various issues. Some of the reissues may contain edited tracks.
Not surprisingly, "Mishawaka" is based on the chord structure of "Indiana."
Track j is essentially a flute-piano duet although a cymbal roll is heard at the very end.

Frank Wess (f) on c; Dick Hyman (p) on a-c, (or) on d-f; Andre Previn (p) on e; Curtis Counce (b) on e; Stan Levey (d) on e.
Track a is called "East Coast, West Coast". The rest of this LP featured a West Coast ensemble performing essentially the same material. MGM label discographer Michel Ruppli indicates that this session was probably recorded in March of 1956. The last track of the LP is titled "Lover Come Back To Me" and incorporates a section spliced in featuring the rhythm section of the West Coast ensemble recorded in January of 1956. The analysis of this track is as follows:
1. 16 bars, the last A section of the "Lover Come Back To Me" form but the line the horns play is very reminiscent of "Bean and the Boys" by Coleman Hawkins. Hyman plays organ.
2. 64 bars (1 complete chorus) of the West Coast rhythm section (Previn, Counce, Levey) improvising on the chord changes of "Lover Come Back To Me." This must be mtx. 56-S-105-2 from the January 1956 Hollywood session.
3. A break followed by a full chorus of improvising on the changes of "Lover Come Back To Me" by the East Coast group: 16 bars trumpet (Jones), 16 bars tenor sax (Wess), 16 bars organ (Hyman), 16 bars trombone (Powell). This is done at a faster tempo than the original one.
4. 16 bars of the A section of Hawkins' "Bean and the Boys," 16 bars Pettiford bass solo (bridge - form is abbreviated by 16 bars), 16 bars, the last A section of "Bean and the Boys." So the last chorus is only 48 bars instead of 64.

Benny Powell does not appear on the 6 tracks from the Hollywood sessions issued on the Warner Bros. LP and CD reissue, recorded on December 3 and 5, 1958. According to the Bruyninckx and Lord discographies, track c is a "spliced tape recorded at 2 different dates, probably December 3 or 5 and the alternate date." A guitar is audible suggesting December 5 when Barney Kessel was present. The personnel on that date besides Kessel were Marshall Cram, Herbie Harper, Joe Howard, Ed Kusby, Dick Nash, Murray McEachern, Tommy Pederson, Frank Beach (tb), George Roberts, Ken Shroyer (btb), Marty Paich (p), Red Mitchell (b), Mel Lewis (d). It is not clear who from the New York session actually performs on track c.

These tracks were recorded in two sessions on unknown dates in either 1959 or 1960. One session employed a nine-piece ensemble and the other, a sixteen-piece band. It's difficult to determine which are the smaller group tracks. The sessions must have been close together in time since the matrix numbers are contiguous. The personnel on each session are not known. Most of the personnel shown were members of the Count Basie Orchestra, the exceptions being Ernie Royal, Travis, Hank Jones, Hinton and Persip. A rhythm guitar is heard but not credited. The album also includes 4 tracks, "My Melancholy Baby," "More Than You Know," "A Tree in the Meadow" and "I Got Lost in His Arms" with only strings, woodwinds and rhythm section.

Frank Wess (as) on c, (f) on a-b, d; unknown (bar) on e.
This LP has one additional track, "March Lightly," with a completely different ensemble that does not include Benny Powell. Track c has an alto saxophone solo, not mentioned in the liner notes, that sounds very much like Frank Wess, who is listed as playing only flute. Track e has an unmentioned baritone saxophonist prominent in the ensemble sections.
Soloists:
Track a - Wess (f), T. Jones, Washington, Payne (breaks)
Track b - Payne (intro), Powell, Foster, T. Jones, Wess (f), Washington, Payne
Track c - Washington, Foster, T. Jones, Wess (as)
Track d - Foster, Powell, Wess (f), T. Jones, Washington
Track e - none (This is a brief ensemble evocation of "When the Saints Go Marching In.")
