This is Johnny Hartman backed by a large ensemble most of whom are unidentified. Earlier documents suggested that Budd Johnson played tenor saxophone on these takes, but the names listed, without Johnson, were listed in the 2002 reissue as "newly found information from the Savoy archives..."
The timing for track a on many issues is closer to 2:38, but on the 2002 reissues, it's longer due to the "restored introduction."

Jerry Burshard (t) on c, g; Tyree Glenn (tb) on d, (vib) on a-c, e-h.
Trumpet (presumably Burshard) is heard only on tracks c and g. Trombone (presumably Glenn) is heard only on track d. The vibraphonist sounds very much like Tyree Glenn.
The sessions of Nov. 29, 1947, Dec. 12, 1947, and Dec. 18, 1947 were intended to stockpile material in anticipation of the impending American Federation of Musicians recording ban, effective Jan. 1, 1948.

Johnny Hartman (v) on d.
Compared to the version recorded in the studio for RCA Victor on April 14, 1949 (see below), this live take of "I Should Care" is slower, includes Dizzy Gillespie's trumpet solo, and is over two minutes longer.
Regarding Alto AL 703, "1972" is etched into center wax on two copies reviewed by the author (Akkerman). There are no liner notes and no information regarding the source of the recordings or instrumentation is provided; however, it is assumed that all the tracks on this album were drawn from broadcast recordings made at the Royal Roost on October 2, 5, 9, 16, and 23, 1948 and were part of Boris Rose's private collection. From published performance notes, it can be deduced that "I Should Care" was recorded on October 2, 1948. The LP cover lists track a as "Relaxing At the Camarillo," track e as "What Cha Wa Hoo" and track f as "Ooh Ba Be Dah." Also listed is "I'll Wait For You" (presumably "I Waited For You") but no such track is found on the disc. Timings shown do not include applause.

Johnny Hartman (v) on e, j; Francisco 'Chano' Pozo (v) on f.
Ken Vail's Dizzy Gillespie: The Bebop Years, 1937-1952 lists "Day By Day" on this session with Hartman as vocalist, but the track was typically performed by the Gillespie Orchestra as an instrumental. Some sources show "S'posin'" released on Alto AL 703 Melodic Revolution, but a hands-on inspection of the album revealed that the only track featuring Hartman is "I Should Care" from October 2, 1948. This LP lists track f as "Monteca," track d as "Enchantment" and has no liner notes.
"Jubiliee" performances for the Armed Forces Radio Services were recorded on 16-inch discs and distributed worldwide to the U.S. military. This live version of "S'posin'" was originally released as part of the Jubilee series in December 1948. Spotlight SPJ122 uses recordings from Jubilee #313, and although there is agreement that the Royal Roost performances in October 1948 are the source, the specific dates for each track are unknown. "S'posin'" was performed at the Royal Roost on Oct. 9, 16, and 23, so any of those dates could be the source. Two instrumental tracks ("Enchantment" [actually "Dizzier and Dizzier"] and "One Bass Hit"), only known to have been recorded on the 9th, surfaced on Alto AL 703, so the author (Akkerman) deduced that "S'posin'" was likely recorded the same day as part of that set. It is not confirmed that tracks k-m were also recorded on this date.
Track e is archived as a private 16 inch acetate stored at the Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University, Dana Library, Newark NJ.

Regarding "S'posin'", see notes from Oct. 9, 1948 for more information.
Tom Lord's The Jazz Discography does not list Hartman as vocalist on "Confess", but A Jazz Discography of Dizzy Gillespie by Jergen Grunnet Jepsen does, and since he appeared on the Oct. 23 version, it is likely that he sang on this date as well.
Some sources show tracks d and h as released on Alto AL 703 Melodic Revoltion, but a hands-on inspection of the album revealed that the only track featuring Hartman is "I Should Care" from Oct. 2, 1948. A Jazz Discography of Dizzy Gillespie by Jergen Grunnet Jepsen lists "Day By Day" on this session with Hartman as vocalist, but the track was typically performed by the Gillespie Orchestra as an instrumental.

Johnny Hartman (v) on d, k, m-n.
The author (Akkerman) verified the existence of only track d. The other three tracks with Hartman are included to coincide with previously published discographies. The Lord discography lists track l as "Afro Cuban Drum Suite" but it is probably "Cubano-Be, Cubano-Bop."
Track d is archived as a private 16 inch acetate stored at the Institute of Jazz Studies, Dana Library, Rutgers University, Newark NJ.

This is a recording of a broadcast on WMGM’s “Camel Caravan” show, originally from the private collection of Boris Rose. Leonard Feather is the host. According to violin historian Anthony Barnett, “Six more or less complete 30-minute programs with Smith were airchecked during the quartet’s residency in May 1953 of which the tune heard here is the third of six during the last program; Hartman is a surprise guest on this title only.”

The Lord Discography gives the recording date as October 1955. The King/Bethlehem discography gives only 1955. The Cuevas/Friedwald Johnny Hartman Discography gives 1956. Based on other known Bethlehem recording sessions and catalog numbers, this Hartman session was likely held in late October/early November 1955.
The only true "alternate" take on the CD reissues that include "alternates" is "Down in the Depths." The rest ("They Didn’t Believe Me, "I’m Glad There Is You," "I’ll Remember April," "I See Your Face Before Me," "September Song") are exactly the same as the original releases except that each has some conversation added at the beginning. The most interesting is "I’ll Remember April" in which is heard a false start featuring a more animated Ralph Sharon piano introduction before Hartman confuses a lyric. The alternate take of "I See Your Face Before Me" features Hartman asking for help with the lyrics and reciting them before the music begins.
The following three sessions are part of the Bethlehem Records production of Gershwin's opera "Porgy and Bess." The three tracks are the only ones on which Hartman appears and were probably not all recorded on the same date.
Specific information for each track in the opera is not known but some of the main performers are: Mel Tormé (as Porgy), Frances Faye (Bess), vocalists; with Duke Ellington and his Orchestra; Russ Garcia and his Orchestra; also featuring Betty Roché (Clara), George Kirby (Sportin’ Life), Johnny Hartman (Crown), Sallie Blair (Serena), and Frank Rosolino (Jake), vocalists; and the Australian Jazz Quintet. Other participants of note are: Stan Levey, Pat Moran, Joe Derise, Don Fagerquist, Maynard Ferguson, Herbie Harper, Herbie Mann, Bob Enevoldsen, Claude Williamson, Sam Most, Buddy Childers, Bill Holman, Ralph Sharon, Sal Salvador, Max Bennett, Alvin Stoller and Irv Kluger.
Asked by the author (Akkerman) in 2010 when the L.A. sessions for this release occurred, Bethlehem founder, Gus Wildi, responded, “It must have been in the early part of the year….Aside from the recording activity I made a trip to Las Vegas with the owner of a record pressing plant. It was not hot there at all; hence my deduction that it could not possibly have been in summer.” Print advertising for Bethlehem’s Porgy and Bess appeared by mid-August 1956 and a review appeared in the October 27 Billboard.
The liner notes of Bethlehem BCP-6009 credit Hartman on the track “Law Scene” but this reference is not made on the other issues and is likely a misprint. The photo on the BCP-6040 album-box cover shows a red handkerchief in a back pocket on a pair of denim jeans. EXLP-1 has a slot cut along the top of the pocket in which was placed an actual, removable, red handkerchief with facsimile artist signatures

|
Little is known about this recording session. The unidentified ensemble backing Hartman includes tenor saxophone, guitar, piano, bass, drums, bongos and backup vocals.
MVM 109 Hitsville is a compilation of ten tracks, two of them featuring Hartman. The album cover lists Mount Vernon Music as being located in Mount Vernon, New York. No other information as to the source or date of the recordings is provided though several of the artists besides Hartman (The Five Satins, The Turbans, and Billy Myles) were recorded by Herald Records in the mid- to late 1950s. A review of Herald discographies reveals no affiliation with MVM. Since the sound-production and instrumentation is similar for a, b, and c above, they were likely all recorded at the same session for Herald and two of the tracks (including the apparent out-take, “Durango”) ended up on the MVM album. Track c is listed on MVM 109 as “You Better Believe.”

This album was probably recorded at several sessions. The personnel in the orchestras are not identified but include woodwinds (flutes, oboe, clarinet; tracks a, b, d, e-h, j, k), saxophones (tracks c, f, i, k, l) and French horn (tracks b, e, j). A four-piece rhythm section (guitar, piano, bass, drums) is heard on all tracks.
Tom Lord’s The Jazz Discography dates this session as “c. 1958.” December 1958 is a possibility but the music industry is known for shutting down during this month, and Hartman was known for returning home to Chicago for the holidays. The author’s (Akkerman's) copy of Roost 2232 has the pressing dates “1-13-59” and “1-14-59” etched in the center wax so the first week of January 1959 is also a plausible date for this session.

Johnny Hartman (ldr) on a-b, d-e, (v) on a-b, d-e.
These tracks are of poor quality with audio drop outs and an out-of-tune piano. They resemble personal recordings not meant for release. The VGM 0011 album cover provides only an Ohio post office box as an address. The recording was probably done by Frank Sousan who was also responsible for Wes Montgomery Recorded Live At Jorgie's Jazz Club, VGM 001 (1961) and Grant Green: The Holy Barbarian, St. Louis, 1959, Uptown UPCD 27.68 (2012).
From Ronald Lyles' Andrew Hill Discography: On LP c listed as "Andrew Grooves I" and f listed as "Andrew Grooves II." Contrary to what's indicated on the LP sleeve, side A consists of a-e. Side B consists of d, e (repeated) f, a, b (repeated).

Information on the many unissued tracks of this session comes from Barry Kernfeld, "John Coltrane in Rudy Van Gelder's Studio," Names & Numbers, no. 33 (April 2005): 2–7; no. 34 (July 2005): 3–9, errata 14–15, which is accessible here.
The issued master of "Lush Life" is a combination of take no. 7 and insert no. 3. The master of "Autumn Serenade" orginally had an introduction that was deleted. The issued master of "Dedicated to You" is a combination of take no. 5 and insert no. 1. Coltrane inserted saxophone parts to "Lush Life," "My One and Only Love" and "You Are Too Beautiful" at a later recording session, but because an early mix without these additions was briefly released, the incorrect myth arose that there were released alternate takes for these songs.
On Impulse 45-218, "Lush Life" is edited to 3:32 and "My One and Only Love" is edited to 2:43. Impulse B0001126-16 contains both mono and stereo versions.
Michael Cuscuna indicated in the liner notes to the 1995 CD reissue (GRD 157) that the master take of "Afro-Blue" was lost; however, it reappeared in a 2005 auction but was withdrawn by Coltrane family members before the sale.
Coltrane only plays soprano saxophone on "Afro-Blue."

The unidentified orchestra backing Hartman on this very commercially oriented session includes strings. The 1996 release from USA Music Group states “previously unissued album” but Musicor 2502 pre-dated it by nineteen years. The liner notes for the 1997 release from Gary Music incorrectly state, “This album was recorded in 1976 and was never released because the master tapes were lost. A 2-track tape was found by the producer and writer of the songs in 1994.”

During a weekend in the summer of 1976, Hartman recorded the material for two episodes of Alec Wilder’s “American Popular Song” series to be broadcast on National Public Radio. Hartman’s appearance featured primarily music composed by Billy Strayhorn and Cole Porter as well as two songs from Alec Wilder. Twenty of these tracks were eventually released after Hartman’s death on Thank You for Everything (Audiophile 165). In those liner notes Loonis McGlohon incorrectly stated the recordings took place in 1978.
Track g features an unpublished lyric by Larry Carr. Track h uses the lyric by Bob Russell. Tracks e, n, p and x are Hartman/McGlohon duets.
Tracks i, m and o were broadcast as part of the original “American Popular Song” radio series with Alec Wilder for National Public Radio.
Regarding LP JJA 19795, “A Box Office Production” is printed on the label but no other record company information is provided. One of the persons involved with the pressing of this LP communicated to the author (Akkerman) that it was a “pirated do-it-yourself” album and only “a couple hundred” copies were pressed.

The album Once in Every Life earned Johnny Hartman the 1981 Grammy nomination for Best Male Jazz Vocalist.
On the Malpaso soundtrack, Hartman’s voice is oddly deeper than usual on several tracks. A comparison of the out-of-print Bee Hive record to the Malpaso release reveals that “Easy Living,” “For All We Know,” and “I See Your Face Before Me” have all been considerably slowed down on the Malpaso album and the playing time for these three tracks is 6:25, 5:30, and 5:03, respectively. On the Bee Hive album the tracks come in at a much shorter 5:55, 5:05, and 4:43. The timings shown are taken from the original Bee Hive LP.

This ballad is the title track to what is often cited as a classic adult-entertainment movie, The Devil In Miss Jones II (1982). The song makes a brief appearance within the film but is performed in near-entirety during the end credits. Because the audio fades out before the song’s ultimate conclusion, the timing is approximate. This is Hartman’s last known studio recording. The film has been released on VHS and DVD but is currently out of print.
The specific recording date and location are unknown. The accompanying ensemble is not identified but includes a jazz combo of guitar, bass, drums, and trumpet backed by strings.

Music director/pianist Tony Monte, in conversation with the author (Akkerman), remembered this taping as being in April 1983, making it the last-known video or audio recording of Hartman. The timing shown includes Hartman's spoken introduction. Video of this performance can be viewed on YouTube.
Final note on the discography: The author (Akkerman) came across references to a handful of Hartman recordings in personal collections but decided not to include them here because they have been temporarily misplaced, permanently lost, or generally have no chance of ever becoming available. Some examples include: a live recording of “Sweet Home Chicago” from 1977 featuring Hartman and vocalist Carol Sloane while in Japan and a tape of a nightclub rehearsal. Attempts to acquire copies of these items were unsuccessful. The authors invite readers to contact them regarding discography revisions.
