Love CDL 1002 — The Henry Jerome Orchestra 1944-45: The First Big Band To Ever Play Bebop (2007)
|
These tracks are described as "live radio air checks." Yes, it is THE Leonard Garment and THE Alan Greenspan who, at this point, were musicians before moving on to bigger and better things. The personnel are incomplete and unverified. Most of the meager information provided seems to come from the book "Swing To Bop" by Ira Gitler (pp. 202-206 & 276-277). It is not known if all the tracks were broadcast from Childs but that is where this band seemed to perform the most. Other musicians that could be present are Ray Turner, Gerry Mulligan, Danny Bank, Gene Roland, Norman Faye, Paul Cohen, Marty Napoleon and Stan Levey. Arrangers were Al Cohn (who sounds like the main tenor saxophone soloist), Johnny Mandel and Bill Vitale who also played lead alto saxophone.
There are actually 11 tracks on this CD although only 10 are listed on the jewel case insert and disc label. "Tea For Two" is divided into 2 tracks, the second of which (track c) begins with an announcer interrupting the broadcast to inform listeners that Allied troops had landed on Phuket Island, off the coast of what is now Thailand. Based on historical records from World War II (New York Times - thanks to Michael Fitzgerald), this performance then probably took place on Wednesday, July 25, 1945. Track a comes from a New Year's Eve broadcast but the announcer does not give a year. Track k ends with a bit of a theme song under the announcer's closing comments.
Love Records is described as "a division of Henry Jerome Music, Inc." This CD has a copyright date of 1997 but does not seem to have been issued until 2007. With regard to the claim that the Jerome band was the "first big band ever to play bebop," it should be noted that the Billy Eckstine band, with Dizzy Gillespie, Wardell Gray and Oscar Pettiford among many others, was recording for De Luxe as early as April 1944.

Suzan Carol (v) on a.
The information on these soundies was provided by Mark Cantor. The Milt Britton band was a comedy band along the lines of that of Spike Jones. The entire personnel are unidentified but the ensemble was composed of 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, 4 reeds, piano, guitar, bass and drums. Drummer Stan Levey has positively identified Tiny Kahn and trumpeter Norman Faye. A comedian named "Mousie" is featured in both soundies.
Billboard Reviews:
"Injun Gal is a novelty tune featuring Milt Britton and His Band with Suzan Carol handling the vocals. A dead-pan trio rigged out in Indian headdresses and blankets also chants a couple of choruses. Bandstand setting."
"Von Suppe's "Poet and Peasant Overture" takes an awful beating at the hands of Milt Britton and His Band. The boys start out seriously enough but end up literally tearing the place apart. Bandstand setting."

Tracks b and c are the same blues line as recorded by the Benny Goodman Sextet for Capitol on April 14, 1949 and at that session called "Bedlam" (Gray was present). On Sittin' In With 506, track b is called "Stoned." On Jax 5003, track a (thinly disguised "Fine and Dandy") is called "Dumpy" and track b is called "Finsterness." On Jax 5008, track c is called "Baldy" and track d is called "Nothing." Track d is for all intents and purposes, the standard "Idaho." On Jade 703, track a is called "Light Grey." Some issues of track b apparently are edited with Al Haig's introduction deleted.

Boyd Raeburn (sax) on a-k, m-o; George Marin (v) on b.
The Lord and Bruyninckx Discographies indicate Tiny Kahn as the drummer but the liner notes to Golden Era 15014 list Irv Kluger and not Kahn. According to Tiny Kahn discographer Malcolm Walker, Kahn is the drummer. Track k is performed only by the rhythm section substituting for an absent Ginny Powell whose feature "How High the Moon" usually was. The announcer states that Powell was indisposed because of serious dental work. Arrangements are by George Handy and Johnny Richards. According to Golden Era 15014, the male vocalist on track b is George Marin but no other references to a singer with that name could be found.
Despite what I had indicated previously, thanks to Bruno Leicht I am now convinced that track l does, in fact, belong with this broadcast and not the V-Disc recording below done in the same time period.

This track is called "So Long Joe" on Joyce 3002 and begins with the ending of another performance. This is music from the soundtrack of a Universal-International short film featuring Rich's orchestra in a nightclub setting. This is the only title arranged by Tiny Kahn. Both Lord and Bruyninckx indicate that this tune is the same as "Belvedere Bop" but it is not the composition that Chubby Jackson introduces as "Belvedere Bop" on March 12, 1949. It is identical to "Flying the Coop" recorded by the Chubby Jackson band on March 15, 1950 and March 31, 1957.

This session was part of the "Eddie Condon's Floor Show" TV series. Condon was the host and sometimes also performed. Some sources, including an article by Bert Whyatt in the March 1, 2011 IAJRC Journal, indicate that this broadcast took place on March 5, 1949 but Tiny Kahn was performing with the Chubby Jackson band at the Royal Roost on that date. Many sources only give the date as "occurring between January 1 and September 24, 1949." Another source for some of the information shown is Jazz On the Screen by David Meeker. There is hardly unanimous agreement among sources as to who exactly performs on the titles of this show. What's shown is a best guess.

The announcer is Symphony Sid Torin. "Jumpin' With Symphony Sid" is not listed on the LP. It is just a short version including Sid's spoken introduction leading into "Tiny's Blues." Track c is listed as "Father Knickerbocker" on the LP. The identity of the scat vocalist on track e assisting Jackson is not known.
The notes to the 2000 Mosaic Records compilation, The Complete Capitol Recordings of Woody Herman indicate that "Boomsie" is the same blues line as "That's Right" recorded by Herman on December 29, 1948. This is not true. While the two blues have some similarities, they are definitely not identical. The ASCAP database shows a composition by Shorty Rogers called "That's Right." Since Rogers arranged the title for Herman, Rogers is most likely also the composer of the song recorded for Capitol and not Candoli-Socolow-Jackson as indicated in the Mosaic set.

Most discographies indicate that this was an unissued session done for the Deluxe label; however, according to pianist Gene DiNovi, this was only a rehearsal and not a commercial recording (see CD liner notes). The goal of this session may have been to produce demo discs for the promotion of Roland's band. It is assumed that Roland is the composer and arranger of tracks b and c.
Tracks a and d are the same line as the shout chorus employed on the classic Miles Davis Birth of the Cool Capitol recording of "Godchild" (Jan. 21, 1949, composed by George Wallington, arranged by Gerry Mulligan). It is also the line recorded by Mulligan for Capitol on Jan. 31, 1953 with a tentet and titled "Ontet." The titles shown for tracks a, b and d (except for "Ontet") come from the source material used for the CD release. Track c is simply called "Blues." The four titles from this session found in discographies are "Oh, Them Saxes," "Hold Them Trumpets," "Blues In Our Times" and "Symphony Sid's Symphonette" and probably come originally from Jepsen's discography. Jepsen's source may have been the Swiss discographer/record producer/journalist Kurt Mohr.
It is interesting to note that the rhythm section is the same as that of the short lived Chubby Jackson band of 1949 (see sessions above).
Soloists (trumpets could not be conclusively identified):
Track a - probably Roland (t), Getz, trumpet, Cohn, DiNovi
Track b - DiNovi (intro), trumpet, trumpet, Sims, trumpet, trumpet, trumpet
Track c - DiNovi (intro), Mulligan, Getz, trumpet, trumpet, Kahn, trumpet
Track d - trumpet, trumpet, Cohn, DiNovi

These performances are taken from a live radio broadcast of "Excursions In Modern Music" on the Mutual Broadcasting System. The announcer is Tom Reddy. The bands of both Barnet and Woody Herman perform separately and then join together on track e. Stan Kenton sits in on piano on this track as well. Only the tracks with the Barnet band are included here. Track e is listed on all issues as "More Moon" but the line first played by the combined ensembles is "Ornithology." The announcer refers to the performance as "How High the Moon." Towards the end of the performance, behind the announcer's closing remarks, the bands play the shout chorus from Shorty Rogers arrangement of "More Moon" but the track then ends prematurely.

The information shown is probably the composite of several live broadcasts of the Barnet Band during August, 1949. Some sources claim that this version of track f is the one issued on Alamac QSR 2446 but the liner notes from that LP indicate that the title was recorded in New York in October, 1949. Raben reports that this version of track e is from AFRS "One Night Stand" transcription no. 1294. Tracks c, d and g come from the Lord Discography.

Carlos Vidal (cng) on b-f, (v) on c; Trudy Richards (v) on d.
Track f is called "Really?".
The featured soloists in Barnet's 1949 band, besides the leader, include Dean (as), Hafer (ts) and Williamson (p). Ericson, Ferguson and Severinsen had trumpet solo spots as did trombonists Harper ans Kenney. Ferguson is featured on track b in a performance so overwhelming in its high-register technical display that the Jerome Kern estate forced it to be withdrawn from commercial distribution.

Swing Era LP 12"1019 — Rhapsody In Barnet 1940-49
|
Desne Ahlers, the daughter of Paul Villepigue, has compelling evidence that her father arranged this track which is definitely the Phil Moore composition although spelled "Cornacopia" on Swing Era 1019 (which gives no composer credits). Barnet's soprano saxophone is featured. The bassist may be Red Kelly.
This LP includes an over 7-minute version of "Rhapsody In Blue" (Johnny Richards arrangement) which the liner notes assign to this radio broadcast; however, it is really "Rhapsody In Blue parts 1 & 2" recorded by Barnet's band for Capitol Records on March 17, 1949 but never issued by that label. The drummer on that session was Cliff Leeman and not Tiny Kahn.

This information comes from Proper Box 76. The Bruyninckx discography gives the recording date as ca. late September 1949, the pianist as Dave Simpson and the bassist as Jack Seymour. Arranger/author/historian/teacher Jeff Sultanof reports that the arrangement of track a is a combination of Tiny Kahn's stock arrangement of his tune with modifications for a larger ensemble by a Heath arranger, probably Reg Owen.

This session has generated some controversy as to whether a drummer is present. I hear no drummer on tracks a and b but on tracks c and d I hear brushes very softly keeping time on a cymbal. Despite what some discographies claim, Frank Rosolino's trombone is not heard on this session and there are no vocalists present on tracks c and d.

This session produced two other titles, "Make Believe" (51-S-260-4) and "Why Do I Love You?" (51-S-262-4), apparently not arranged by Tiny Kahn, which were issued on MGM 11043. Some discographies give July 22, 1951 as the recording date of this session. July 23 is taken from the Ruppli-Novitski MGM Label Discography. DeFranco and Corabi are the soloists on track a.
Many sources indicate that Tiny Kahn was the drummer on a live broadcast of the Kai Winding Sextet from Birdland on September 3, 1951. Two titles, "Donna Lee" and "East of the Sun" were issued on Spotlite (Eng.) SPJ 143 (Al Haig Meets the Master Saxes, Vol. 3; 1980 LP which lists Kahn as the drummer). But according to Dave Green who has listened to the Voice of America broadcast, the drummer announced by Leonard Feather is Sid Bulkin (see IAJRC Journal, September 2013, p. 34).

The Stan Getz Quintet appeared at Storyville opposite Billie Holiday and her trio [Buster Harding (p), John Fields (b), Marquis Foster (d)]. On several occasions, the two stars appeared together and some of the performances were broadcast on radio (WMEX). This is one and sources offer conflicting information as to exactly which night the encounter took place. Donald Maggin in "Stan Getz: A Life In Jazz," William Morrow, 1996, p. 113 states: "Stan sat in with Billie Holiday every night during their joint Storyville engagement, and he can be heard on a broadcast air check gracefully accompanying her on October 29, 1951." The personnel also have been controversial and those shown derive from announcer Nat Hentoff's spoken introduction which was preserved. Detailed information on the Billie Holiday appearances at Storyville can be found at The Billie Holiday online discography.

Bill Harris is the only soloist. It is likely although unconfirmed that the arranger is Ralph Burns.
From April to July 1952, the Elliot Lawrence Orchestra broadcast from the Statler Hotel in New York City and many of these radio shows were recorded privately and have circulated among collectors over the years. The information shown in the sessions below from that venue comes from Tiny Kahn discographer Malcolm Walker. I have auditioned some of the recordings but assigning a precise date to each track is problematic because the band would perform the same material each night and thus several versions of certain titles exist. Here is a listing of the titles I have auditoned with unverified months of recording. Timings are in parentheses:
April 1952:
Who Fard That Shot? (3:10, 3:21)
Jive At Five (2:24, 3:08)
You Took Advantage Of Me (2:39, 2:30, 2:36)
A Little Wake Up Music (2:56, 3:08)
May 1952:
You Took Advantage Of Me (2:39, 2:30, 2:36)
Anytime (4:00)
My Heart Stood Still (3:12)
Jeepers Creepers (2:43, 3:00)
Taking a Chance On Love (3:29)
June 1952:
You Took Advantage Of Me (2:39, 2:30, 2:36)
Maybe (2:43)
Who Fard That Shot? (3:10, 3:21)
Jeepers Creepers (2:43, 3:00)
Moten Swing (4:12)
Sing, Baby, Sing (2:02)
Good Wood (3:17)
A Little Wake Up Music (2:56, 3:08)
Jive At Five (2:24, 3:08)
Tapeworm (4:18)
July 1952:
Maybe (2:43)

These are live performances of the Shorty Rogers Big Band. On Time Is 9804, track f is mislabelled as "Tales of an African Lobster," track g is mislabbelled as "Sometimes I'm Happy" and track h is mislabelled as "I May Be Wrong." The title of track f has been confirmed by Ken Poston and a review of the Time Is CD. This was an arrangement originally written for the Woody Herman Orchestra.
The saxophone assignments are likely but not confirmed. Herb Geller solos on tracks a, d, e, h-k, m and p. It is difficult to identify all the soloists because many of them, especially the trombones, are off-mic.
